We know you care about where your food comes from. We care too. That’s why British food has pride of place on our shelves. From fresh beef, chicken and pork to the meat we use in our chilled ready meals – it’s all British.
And from May 2017, we’ll be the first grocer to exclusively sell British bacon. We work with over 2,500 British farmers we know and trust to provide you with high quality food. Because every single mouthful is important.
Our Co-op Beef Farming Group is made up of 59 farmers, of which 48 breed and produce Hereford cattle. This breed of cattle went into decline in the 1980s. But we champion this native breed and invest in Hereford beef. As a result, the breed is making a comeback. And good thing too, because the meat from Hereford cows is more marbled than continental breeds, giving it bags of flavour. Which means it’s perfect for everything from your Sunday roast to a cottage pie.
All the fresh chicken we sell in our stores is British and we make sure all the birds are reared to our own high welfare standards. We make sure the chickens have access to straw bales and natural daylight through windows. One of our farmers, Jim Bone, was inspired to work with us because he wants to provide his animals with the best possible life. He looks after 150,000 chickens on his farm near Edinburgh – he even teaches local students about the importance of farming sustainably.
Anthony Robinson, one of our pig farmers, understands how important it is to give pigs freedom to roam outdoors. Anthony really focuses on animal welfare, and on his farm he keeps breeding sows outdoors for their whole lives, and all the farm’s piglets are born in an outdoor environment.
