About the farm:
Whitsome Farm near Duns, Berwickshire, is our office base for the Borders in Scotland. We contract farm land in the Borders on behalf of several clients. The land type across the Borders estate varies hugely; from light sands by the Tweed to a heavy loam further inland. This is some of the best farmland in Scotland with phenomenal views on the land by the coast, which has been classified by the Countryside Agency as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
From Farm to Fork
The Borders From Farm To Fork project is based at the Hirsel Estate, Coldstream, by kind permission of the Earl of Home CVO; CBE, who has been a long standing client of The Co-Operative Farms in the Borders.
This is a good example of a successful joint co-operative arrangement between farmer and client. Sally Fleming, project leader, is based in one of the renovated buildings at the old Hirsel Farmstead, which has been converted into a craft centre, museum, tearooms and children’s play area.
The Estate also supply an employee part time to help with the outside farming aspect of the From Farm To Fork project, which allows Sally to concentrate on inside activities and healthy cookery using home grown produce.
At The Hirstel there are pedigree Highland cattle, old established woodlands, and plots of wheat, potatoes, sunflowers and maize, which the children love to see and explore.
Name: Richard Byass
About Richard: Born and bred on a farm in the East Riding of Yorkshire, I have a passion for farming, and confidence in my practical and academic capabilities. Before joining The Co-operative Farms in 2011 I was a managing partner in the family farming business for over 20 years. Academic achievements include BSc (Hons) Agric (Econ) from The University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and more recently an MBA from The Royal Agricultural University, Cirencester. I am also FACTS and BASIS qualified.
Since joining The Co-operative Farms I have enjoyed the many challenges put to me. I am keen on getting the fundamentals of farming right, as well as introducing new technologies where appropriate. I also think it is very important to encourage and support the future generation of farmers.
When dealing with clients, I believe in a respectful, honest and up-front approach, and I enjoy working with people who share my passion and vision for the future of farming.
