Supporting Great British Farming

Our customers have told us that the best fresh British produce is really important to them, which is why The Co-operative continually strives to support and invest in British farming and producers.

From the end of September 2011 we are changing the packaging on our British fresh fruit and vegetables to showcase some of the British farmers that work hard to provide the best quality fresh produce for our stores.

Packs of our autumn produce, such as potatoes and brown onions, will be clearly labelled with a large Union Jack so our customers can easily recognise they are buying seasonal British produce.

The Co-operative Farms

Did you know that we own our own farms? We have been farming for well over 100 years and are one of the UK’s largest farmers. We currently farm around 50,000 acres of land in England and Scotland, the equivalent of about 25,000 football pitches!

Our farms provide some of the British fruit and vegetables that you are able to buy at Co-operative food stores, as well as flour, honey and cider.

Four growers from The Co-operative Farms will feature on the packaging going into store. Look out for:

Russell Armstrong, brown onion grower

William Barnett, Cox’s apple grower

Lucy Mason, Conference pear grower

Jack Parsons, potato grower

Find out where we farm, what we grow and discover what species we help on our farms.

You will also see photographs and quotes from the British farmers who grow some of our fruit and vegetables, providing assurance of the quality and care taken by them to get fresh produce to our stores.

Products like asparagus, peas, strawberries and raspberries will appear in the new design throughout next spring and summer, enabling customers to easily support British farming by eating seasonally when produce is at its best.
